description: This data file originated as part of the BOEM-sponsored study entitled Natural Offshore Oil Seepage and Related Tarball Accumulation on the California Coastline - Santa Barbara Channel and the Southern Santa Maria Basin; Source Identification and Inventory(Open-File Report 2009-1225). This data file consists of 2 original datasets identified as CA_Features_20130811.txt and Table 4-2 from the main study document (page 86). Table 4-2 provides average values of tarball parameters for 10 beaches in the study area. CA_Features_20130811.txt was obtained from United States Board on Geographic Names - Domestic and Antarctic names - State and Topical Gazetteer Download Files (, or Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), in order to map the beach locations. Now the data in Table 4-2 can be spatially visualized. The caption for Table 4-2 states: “Average values of tarball parameters showing average values for each beach sampled by counting and weighing tarballs along 3 to 5 beach perpendicular transects each 4 m wide, then scaled up to the length of each beach (see text for details). Data from each beach represents measurements made on one day for each month sampled. Tarballs less than about 3 mm in diameter were not counted, however the mass of these accumulations was estimated when noted by beach survey personnel. Calculated numbers are rounded to 2 significant figures.” Tribe: A classification of oil samples based on similar geochemical characteristics
